Andy Long passes his final defense with flying colors to become the first PhD graduate from the Ferguson Lab. Andy’s dissertation concerns the development and deployment of nonlinear manifold learning techniques, statistical thermodynamics, molecular simulation, and optimization to understand and engineer colloidal self-assembling materials. It represents the culmination of five years of high quality, productive, and collaborative research that produced many technical and scientific advances, including the successful realization of the ultimate goal of inverse materials design using “landscape engineering” first discussed way back during Andy L’s grad visit weekend in April 2012. Andy is now leaving to commence a position as a Senior Data Scientist at 3M in Minneapolis-St. Paul. Big congratulations to Dr. Long!
